“The majority of my job as an estate planning attorney, and the part I enjoy the most, is educating people about their options," says John Roth. This is the inspiration for John's presentation aimed at clarifying the sometimes daunting process of estate planning.
Simply put, estate planning is the process of putting together a plan, which will allow someone to step into your shoes to manage your assets in the event of incapacity or death. Estate planning is not a one-size-fits-all proposition; each person and family has a different situation and goals.
Wills and trusts are possible vehicles; however, each has accomplishes different goals. In "Will vs. Trust", John will explain how it is possible to use a will or a trust to say who should get your property after your life. Trusts can sometimes be used to accomplish additional goals, such as avoiding the probate process, protecting property in the event of a lawsuit or divorce, minimizing taxes, and reducing the chances of disputes following a person’s death.

Attorney John Roth is the founder of Hawaii Trust & Estate Counsel, a statewide estate planning law firm with Big Island offices in Waimea, Hilo, and Kona. He has taught Estate Planning at the Richardson School of Law, and business law at the University of Hawaii—Hilo.
